ELIOT, Maine � The town Select Board will hold a special public hearing Saturday, May 5, on extending the town�s moratorium on retail marijuana sales. In an email to town staff Monday, Town Manager Dana K. Lee said, �This is an emergency situation and will be declared as such.� He said the town charter permits a hearing on short notice.
Voters approved the moratorium on retail marijuana sales for 180 days on Nov. 7, 2017; it ends May 6. State-wide retail marijuana sales and social clubs were approved by Maine voters in 2016, and the Eliot Planning Board recommended the Select Board ask for the moratorium to allow time to write local ordinances. While a moratorium must be approved by voters, the Select Board can extend it.
At its last meeting, April 26, the Select Board discussed extending the moratorium and holding a public hearing on it Thursday, May 10, when it has also scheduled a public hearing on the town warrant. Select Board Member John �Jack� Murphy asked if the hearing, and a vote to
